“Moskovskiy Patriot” (Moscow Patriot), the International Ship Modeling Competition among static models (C Classes) finished on April, 23, 2023. Four countries (Russia, Belarus, Uzbekistan and Germany) participated in the competition and presented 128 models. The contributions of Russia and Belarus were particularly significant. While the majority of models were presented by Russian competitors, modelers from Belarus placed 34 models before the international judges’ commission...

Protocols per model class: C-1, C-1J, C-2, C-2J, C-2S, C-3, C-3J, C-4, C-5, C-6A, C-6AJ, C-6B, C-6BJ, C-6DE, C-6DEJ, C-6S, C-6SJ, C-7, C-7J, C-8, C-8J

The venue suited the event well: Piotr Velikiy Moscow Municipal Maritime Center for Children provided its spacious halls for the competition which highlighted the “naval” aura of the event. By the way, several hundreds of school students who are keen on water sports are educated in the Center; their interests range from water polo and sailing to ship modeling sport. One can hardly find a more grateful and understanding spectator than these children!

On behalf of SMSIF we would like to thank organizers and partners without whom it would have been almost impossible to have this competition, namely, Federation of Ship Modelling Sport of Russia (also personal thanks to Vladimir Zhornik, its President), Marat Kuchushev (Director of “Patriot.Sport” Moscow Center), Tatiana Dreger (Director of Piotr Velikiy Moscow Municipal Maritime Center for Children), Nikita Pichugin (Director of Government Authorities and Non-Governmental Organizations Interaction Department, JSC United Shipbuilding Corporation).

And now let’s look at the results. For many ship modeling classes, the competition was quite serious. The participating models were of high quality as the final score was over 95 points for many of them. The exposition in C-2 Classes (models of ships with mechanical propulsion), C-4 (miniature models), C-6 (plastic models) and C-7 (paper and cardboard models) was especially competitive.

Unfortunately, due to their size and transportation problems, many interesting models in such complex classes as C-1 (sailing ships models) and C-3 (dioramas, cross-sections and development series) could not arrive at the competition.

The winner in C-1 Class (first place, 97.67 points) was "La Jacinthe" schooner by Anatoliy Osipov (Russia). In C-2 Class, the champion of several recent international competitions remained the same – Nikolay Rumyantsev (Russia) with “Soznatelnyy” destroyer (97.67 points). Artyom Krashevnikov with his “Sisoy Velikiy” battleship (97.00 points) and Alexey Ukhanov (rescue tugboat, 96.33 points) came right after him. Dmitriy Fyodorov (juniors, Russia) presented a notable model in C-2J – “Yavuz” battle cruiser, gaining 90.67 points.

C-3D Class also attracted a lot of spectators thanks to Vitaliy Makhorskiy’s admiralty models of "Sussex" и "Naiad" English frigates. They won the first and the second place with 97.00 and 96.33 points correspondingly.

Several models definitely stood apart in miniature classes (C-4D, with models in scale under 1:250), such as “Aurora” cruiser by Alexander Kovalchuk (Belarus, 97.00 points), “Svirepyy” destroyer by Oleg Khotko (Belarus, 96.67 points) and “Ryurik” cruiser by Vladimir Zhornik (Russia, 95.67 points). These models won the first, second and third place respectively.

Belarussian modelers also actively participated in C-6A Class (plastic models, scale under 1:500) with models constructed in a very challenging scale, 1:700. Oleg Khotko won the competition in this class with his “Missouri” battleship (Belarus, 98.67 points).

The largest number of models (15) was presented in C-6B Class. It is worth mentioning that this class has traditionally been popular among ship modelers, for instance, from 45 to 96 models of this class appeared at world championships in different years. This time the winner in C-6B Class was “Kongo” battleship by Oleg Khotko, scale 1:130. By the way, the competition here was tough, and 5 best models of this class which were “running neck-and-neck” were all awarded with gold medals.

Fyodor Pichugin (Russia) was by far the leader among juniors (C-6BJ) with his “Dreadnought” model (97.00 points).

In C-7 Class, the judges’ commission awarded “Admiral Hipper” cruiser by Ignat Yaroshenko (Belarus) with the highest score (99.00), thus appreciating the amount and high quality of modeler’s work.

And this is just the beginning: the competition in Moscow will be followed by Belarus Open Cup which will start a week later in Minsk and where the best modelers of Russia and Belarus will come together once again. Besides, the Belarussian capital city is going to host yet another international ship modeling sport competition which is planned for 16-18 June 2023, in classes of static and radio-controlled models.
