With the kind support of: Vladivostok City Administration, Vladivostok City Parliament (Duma), PAO Sovkomflot (MOEX-FLOT), “Vladivosotk Public Spaces Board” Municipal Autonomous Institution, JSC “Dalzavod Ship Repair Center,” JSC “DNIIMF” (Far East Marine Fleet Scientific Research Institute), “Poseidon” Group Maritime Agency, PAO “Rosneft Oil Company,” “Slavda” Company Group, LLC “REKORD”, LLC “FESCO Service Center”, Vladivostok Branch.
The competition welcomed representatives of such countries as Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Jordan and Indonesia. Russian competitors included teams from Altai Krai, Moscow, Kaluga and Chelyabinsk Regions as well as modelers from Primorskiy and Khabarovsk Krai.
The opening ceremony took place on 6 August at Far East Maritime Training Center which is affiliated with Admiral Nevelskoy Maritime State University. The same venue was used for the static evaluation of models in NS Category which should closely resemble their real prototypes.
Besides, on that day, the guests genuinely enjoyed a tour around the Maritime University Museum where they carefully viewed such famous and expertly executed models as “Pallada” frigate and Vitus Bering’s “Saint Gabriel” boat. The competitors’ attention was specifically attracted by Vladislav Subbotin’s cord models and awards which were among the museum exposition. Vladislav Subbotin was a multiple World and Europe Champion, and was awarded with the title of “Honored Worker of Physical Culture of the Russian Federation.”
Next day, on 7 August, the starts began. The start places were located at the Mine Town Park lakes, right in the city center and hosted such categories of models as radio-controlled scale models, radio-controlled speed and cord models. One of the lakes, middle-sized, perfectly suited A/B models and was additionally equipped with the protection net (taking into consideration the spectators’ safety). The lower lake was also well-prepared – new larch wood platforms had been set up with shelters for the judges and start places for the competitors in M and NS Classes. Competition courses in these classes were interchanged, and the starts ran consecutively.
The competition was held in 2 age groups – seniors and juniors. As Mikhail Kholosha, Chairman of Primorskiy Krai Regional Department of FSMR, justly remarked, ship modeling sport has almost no age limitations. Thus, at the competition, veteran modelers gladly shared their rich experience and unique technologies with younger competitors.
And the results were sometimes unpredictable. For instance, in ECO Expert-Mini Class, the best results both for senior and junior competitors were practically identical (70 and 68 rounds). Nevertheless, in ECO Expert Class as could have been expected, seniors ran far ahead (78 and 71 rounds correspondingly).
As for winners, Dmitriy Spitsyn came first in ECO Expert-Mini Class and Dmitriy Sokolov – in ECO Expert Class. The junior competition was an exciting struggle for medals as up to 8-9 competitors participated in each ECO Class. Dmitriy Trofimovich ran first among juniors in ECO Expert-Mini Class, and Mikhail Petrov – in ECO Expert Class.
Although F2 and F4 Classes (models-copies) did not have a large number of competitors, all the classes which had been previously announced, participated in the competition. The undisputed leader in F2-S Class was the stealth submarine “Volkhov” (Project 636.3) by Valeriy Shishkin, Master of Sports of International Class (Biysk, Russia). This model is the exact replica of the renowned “Black Hole” and like its prototype, it is able to submerge and skillfully maneuver underwater. The model has received various prizes in multiple international ship modeling sport competitions. As for other classes, Vadim Rudakov’s “Baken” towboat (F2-A) and S-100 (F4-C) torpedo boat stood out considerably due to their execution and complexity level as well as the amount of work done by the author. The same is true for Vladimir Parmenov’s “Albatros” (anti-submarine corvette, F2-B); all the above-mentioned models well deserved their gold medals.
The starts of cord models are quite comparable to racing bolides and they were especially rich in sports achievements. Irina Baeva ran first in A1-Propeller Class of models (fitted with an ICE with working capacity up to 3.5 cubic cm) reaching the top speed of 192.904 kmh. Dmitriy Dolgikh was a definite leader in А1-Е Class (models fitted with an electric engine), the top speed was 212.5 kmh. Another racer, Valery Yanchenko was awarded with a gold medal in А2 Class (models fitted with an ICE with working capacity up to 7.5 cubic cm) and the speed reaching 166.827. As for winners in a very powerful A3 Class (models fitted with an ICE with working capacity up to 10 cubic cm), Mikhail Kholosha (Vladivostok, Russia), one of the most experienced racers, came first at 230.048 kmh.
His result was also the best in another class, B1 (cord models with air propellers) – 271.8 kmh. Gold medals in В1-Е Class went to Dmitriy Dolgikh (Chelyabinsk Region, Russia) whose models managed to reach the before unseen speed of 281.5 kmh. As Dmitriy commented, he was able to construct a very light-weight model equipped with more high-powered accumulators and a more powerful engine. Thus, Dmitriy Dolgikh beat the previous world record (273.566 kmh) held by Farid Ishmetov (Tatarstan, Russia) since 2017.
The “Pacific Cup-2023” International Competition finalized with a closing ceremony which took place in the impressive Concert Hall located at the Far East Maritime Training Center within Admiral Nevelskoy Maritime State University. Many honorable guests came to the ceremony in order to congratulate the Cup winners on their hard-won gold. Among them were Andrey Brik (Chairman of Vladivostok City Duma), Denis Burov (Rector of Maritime State University). The competition sponsors received letters of gratitude from Duma appreciating their work done to improve the Mine Town Park while preparing it for the competition. While addressing the competition winners and participants, Andrey Brik rightfully remarked: “You showed excellent results at the event and thus made the invaluable contribution in strengthening Vladivostok’s image as the development center of ship modeling sport in the Far East.”
In its turn, the ShipModel Sport International Federation (SMSIF) would like to make acknowledgements to directorship of FSMR Regional Branch in Primorskiy Krai (Vladivostok), Admiral Nevelskoy Maritime State University administration and other organizers and sponsors for raising public awareness of ship model sport in Primorskiy Krai and for conducting the competition at a supreme level!..
