The International Shipmodeling Sport Competition and Belarus Open Cup “Minskaya Vesna-2023” (Minsk Spring) were held in the capital city of Belarus in April 2023, from 29th to 30th. Modelers from Belarus and Russia came to compete in F5-E Class (radio-controlled yachts) and static classes as well. While the total number of models was quite substantial -133, yacht modelers were especially active as this competition was the first major racing event in the new sports season...

In total, 44 yachtsmen competed in F5-E Class, including 14 Russian competitors. Komsomolskoe Ozero – the lake where the competition was held – hosted 6 teams from Minsk, Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Minsk and Grodno regions.

The competition was held in 2 age groups, i.e., seniors and juniors. The results of the competition were calculated after 11 races; this way the refereeing commission could fairly determine prize-winners and champions. As you probably remember, final result of this class is the sum total of all races (with 2 worst attempts discarded) which are run in a triangular course. The referees are to estimate how correctly the course is run. Incidentally, in order to win in F5 Classes, one must both possess racing skills and be able to plan and build the model in a proper way, so that it could be seaworthy and fast.

The winner among senior participants was Dmitriy Koypish, a young modeler from Belarus. The second and the third place were taken by Evgeniy Vinogradov and Sergey Sokolov, both from Russia. Among juniors, the prizes went to the following competitors: 1st place – Ivan Lygin, 2nd – Grigoriy Popov, 3rd – Ali Khamid (all coming from the Russian “Petrograd” team).

“Petrograd” was also the winner in the team competition of “Minskaya Vesna-2023” International Competition in F5-E Classes. The team headquarters is Palace of Children’s Creativity, Petrograd District, Saint Petersburg. The second place was taken by DOSAAF Water Sports School, Minsk, Belarus.

As for the competition in static classes, Belarus Open Cup saw 90 such models. The best were in classes С-2, С-4, С-6 and С-7. It is wonderful to see that at least one half of the presented models were constructed by juniors. Many models from young competitors were of great workmanship, with 90-95 points. That means the classes are growing and developing!

It is worth mentioning that it was the first time when the static competition followed new rules of Belarusian Federation of Ship Modeling Sport which had been brought into line with SMSIF Rules. The major change concerned subclasses in С-3, С-4, С-6, С-7 and С-8. As a result, such traditionally small subclasses as wooden models and waterline ship models were eliminated as independent classes and included into C-1 and C-2 respectively. Besides, the amended rules introduced new subclasses, thus the competition program included some popular ship modeling directions – series of ships, cross-sections and dioramas made from plastic (C-6C) and paper (C-7C).

The evaluation criteria were also changed. Previously, they included “Workmanship” (50 points max.), “Amount of work” (20 points max.), “Accuracy according to documents” (20 points max.) and “Impression” (10 points max.). Now, the “Impression” criterion is excluded while the “Amount of work” criterion has a “Level of complexity” sub-section (30 points max.). Such approach allows more models to take part in the competition and to minimize the subjectivity factor during their evaluation.
