The history of “Nizhnevolzhskaya Regatta” began in 1992 when several institutions initiated Russian Ship Modeling Cup among radio-controlled yachts. These trailblazers were “Rivmar” Water and Sailing Center, Astrakhan Regional DOSAAF Council, Astrakhan Regional Sports Committee and Astrakhan Education Committee.

Later on, “Nizhnevolzhskaya Regatta” united under its auspices various sailing and ship modeling competitions, Cups, Championships and Junior Championships of Russia. Many of these were won by Igor Nalevskiy who was a city native, Russia’s Master of Sport of International Class, World and Europe Champion. At present, the competition is held to commemorate the outstanding sportsman.

This year saw the 31st “Nizhnevolzhskaya Regatta” Competition. The venue was as always, in lieu of Privolzhskiy backwater which is one of Astrakhan’s most beautiful landmarks. Such choice provided an opportunity for many city residents to see the competition during their recreation time. Both adults and children who came to see the event asked questions and the competition referees, veteran and beginning modelers were happy to answer them. The city itself was represented by 3 teams – Regional School TechnoPark, Astrakhan Regional Department of Russia’s DOSAAF and FSMR Regional Branch in Astrakhan Region. The Belarusian sports team was quite large (10 competitors). Sportsmen from Belarus took part in “Nizhnevolzhskaya Regatta” Competition for the first time.

There were 21 modelers in F5-M Class, 9 of them were junior competitors. The winner among seniors was Dmitriy Koipish (Belarus), among juniors – Ivan Lygin (Russia).
